Postmodernism: A Graphic Guide

What connects Marilyn Monroe, Disney World, The Satanic Verses and cyberspace?
Answer: postmodernism.
But what exactly is postmodernism?

This graphic guide explains clearly the maddeningly enigmatic concept that has been used to define the world's cultural condition over the last three decades.

Introducing Postmodernism tracks the idea back to its roots by taking a tour of some of the most extreme and exhilarating events, people and thought of the last hundred years: in art-constructivism, conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol; in politics and history – McCarthy's witch-hunts, feminism, Francis Fukuyama and the Holocaust; in philosophy – the work of Derrida, Baudrillard, Foucault and Heidegger.

This book also explores postmodernism's take on today, and the anxious grip of globalization, unpredictable terrorism and unforeseen war that greeted the dawn of the 21st century.

Regularly controversial, rarely straightforward, and seldom easy, postmodernism is nonetheless a thrilling intellectual adventure. Introducing Postmodernism is the ideal guide.

I really enjoy it! It is the summary of my thesis with so many illustrations! If you want to cross the century, you can do by reading these pages! This book suggests the most extraordinary events, people and ideas related with Postmodernism, which sets up in last decades.

this is a really tough subject to get your head round, but i found it pretty easy to understand all the concepts and how they related to each other. finally i understand what people say when they use the term!

I actually bought this in the run up to starting an MA course in modern and postmodern literature. I'm not embarassed to say it really clarified for me the issues raised and discussed within postmodernism, and did it in a fun and accessible way.

Appignanesi and Garratt provide an invaluable resource for readers of all social, philosophical, artistic and even scientific subjects which allude in any way to the extremely scattered and intangible concept of post-modernism. Its concise and engaging categorisation of post-modernism’s diversity of historical aspects and potential consequences make this guide a worthwhile read that is both amusing and thought-provoking!

'Introducing Post Modernism' does exactly what it promises on the cover - it casts some light onto this seemingly impenetrable concept. It uses concrete anchors such as architecture to guide the reader through complex theories, whilst the witty asides make the read enjoyable at the same time. It is thus a definite investment. Ideal for the college student faced with an incomprehensible reading list or the 'jack of all trades', this title in Icon's 'Introducing' series has broad appeal.
