Jacques Derrida, who died in 2004, was one of the most famous philosophers of the late 20th century. Yet his work undermined the rules of philosophy, rejected its methods, broke its procedures and contaminated it with ‘literary’ styles of writing. Derrida’s philosophy was a puzzling array of oblique, deviant and yet rigorous tactics for destabilizing texts, meanings and identities. ‘Deconstruction’, as these strategies have been called, has been reviled and celebrated in equal measure. Taking the reader on an intellectual adventure likely to disturb some of the most comfortable habits of thought, Introducing Derrida is a witty, concise and intelligent confrontation with this colossus of modern philosophy.

I stumbled across 'Introducing Derrida' whilst browsing for titles to help me with a recent philosophy essay. I was immediately impressed and surprised with the books and graphic illustrations- most works on philosophy being rather less visually stimulating! Despite the book's informal lay out the content proved to be far from simplistic and was useful in giving me a great deal of background information about Derrida's life.

How can you introduce Derrida? His controversial philosophy is not for the faint-hearted, nor does it lend itself to easy summaries. The skill in Introducing Derrida is that it addresses infamously complex ideas without twisting or over-simplifying his work. The responses to Derridian thinking and its impact are explored intelligently. The guide acknowledges that it cannot do the impossible and pin Derrida down in a sentence; but it functions as a clever and accessible resource.
